The Independent Electoral Commission for the UNSA 2022 elections hosted its first voter education and sensitization webinar for the UoN community on the evening of March 2nd, 2022 from 7.30pm to 10.00pm.

The virtual event that garnered both staff and students was moderated by Professor Ndeti Ndati, a staff commissioner in the IEC 2022 and comprised of presentations from student commissioners’ Raphael Wamono, Sharon Aserena, the Director Legal and Corporate Board Services, Mr Collins Omondi and the IEC Chairman Professor Collins Odote.

In his opening remarks, Professor Collins Odote mentioned that this was the first of many voter education and sensitization events that the commission had planned for its stakeholders. The chair noted that the sensitization forums are a crucial part of elections especially at a time when students are gearing up for the nomination and campaigns period.  

The IEC through its chair introduced the Returning Officers and the Assistant Returning officers for each Electoral College and encouraged the students to reach out for any assistance.

Raphael Wamono,  a student from the Faculty of Engineering and one of the three IEC Student commissioners, gave a presentation on the Importance of participating in UNSA elections whereas Sharon Aserena also an IEC Student commissioner from the Faculty of Science and Technology, gave a presentation on Disqualification from vying.

Mr. Collins Omondi, Director Legal and Corporate Board Services gave a presentation on the electoral process whereby he sensitized members on PART IV of the UNSA constitution 2017(Amended), 2021.

The IEC chair Professor Odote announced that the Register of Voters had been displayed on the website in accordance with the UNSA constitution. He asked the students to confirm their names and reach out to their respective ROs/AROs or the commission for any issues.

Professor Odote finalized his remarks by reiterating that the commission will carry out a free and fair election guided by the UNSA constitution and relevant University regulations. He emphasized that the students get acquainted with and adhere to the students code of conduct as the election period commenced. The Chair also gave out his contacts for students to communicate on any matter that needed intervention or clarification.
