The International Lead Poisoning Prevention Week of Action (ILPPWA) is observed the last week of October every year from 2013.

The Department of Chemistry is a contributor to the Lead Paint Elimination Activities under the auspices of the World Health Organization and UN Environment. This year, the Department will be joining the global community in marking the 8th ILPPWA from 25th - 31st October 2020. A series of events with media coverage sheduled.

The lined up activities will culminate into a one-day virtual event on 29th October 2020 whose theme is “Intensified Campaigns to Ban the Import, Manufacture, Export, Sale and Use of Lead Paint Across the East Africa Community The event sponsor is Basco Paint Products Ltd in collaboration with the Department of Chemistry, University of Nairobi.

The goal of the event is to advance the understanding, commitment, and actions towards the implementation and enforcement of the East Africa paint standards of total lead content of 90 ppm maximum across the East Africa Region. The event will therefore serve as a platform to advocate for lead free paint in respect to the established paints standards. It will also provide an opportunity for the participants to demonstrate their commitments toward phasing out of lead in paint.
