AAAP Paving the Way for Climate Adaptation at the Changemakers School 2024

The Africa Adaptation Acceleration Program (AAAP), a collaborative initiative by the African Development Bank, the Global Center on Adaptation (GCA), and the University of Nairobi, recently wrapped up a transformative session at the second Changemakers School 2024 in the Netherlands. This intensive program, hosted from October 14-18 at the University of Groningen’s Campus Fryslân, gathered a cohort of passionate climate adaptation advocates from around the globe to exchange knowledge, sharpen skills, and drive impactful climate solutions.

The Changemakers School offered participants hands-on training on developing, implementing, and evaluating climate adaptation projects that meet the pressing demands of today’s environmental challenges. Designed with the latest adaptation insights, the school’s curriculum empowered attendees to emerge as leaders capable of creating resilient infrastructure for a sustainable future.

Engaging Field Visits and Nature-Based Solutions

The program featured immersive field visits across the North Dutch coast, where participants explored cutting-edge adaptation techniques in real-world settings. Attendees visited the Wetterskip Fryslân water management district, Typha Fields, MuzeeAquarium Delfzijl, the Marconi Site, and the innovative Double Dike system. These excursions highlighted nature-based solutions that integrate ecological preservation with resilient infrastructure, providing adaptable models for African and global contexts alike.

Keynote Lecture by Prof. Patrick Verkooijen: Bridging the Finance Gap

Prof. Patrick Verkooijen, the Ban Ki Moon Chair on Climate Adaptation, CEO of the Global Center on Adaptation and Chancellor of University of Nairobi, delivered a compelling keynote on "Bridging the Finance Gap: Climate Adaptation in a Multipolar World." His address underscored the importance of mobilizing innovative financial solutions to accelerate climate adaptation efforts, particularly in regions vulnerable to climate shocks. Prof. Verkooijen called for a strategic alignment of global resources to ensure equitable access to climate adaptation financing.

Launch of Dual Doctorate in Climate Adaptation Governance

In an exciting development, Prof. Verkooijen announced a new dual doctorate program in Climate Adaptation Governance between the University of Nairobi and the University of Groningen. This pioneering program aims to develop research and policy leaders who will bridge the gap between science and actionable policy in climate adaptation.
