The University of Nairobi is set to host the highly anticipated Freedom 250 Festival on July 4, 2026, bringing together technology, education, innovation, sports, culture, and entertainment in one exciting event.

The announcement was made during a courtesy visit by Mr. Mark Burrell, Regional Public Engagement Specialist, to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ayub Gitau.

Speaking during the meeting, Mr. Burrell described the festival as a grand celebration marking 250 years of the United States of America.

"This is a celebration of America's 250th anniversary. We have held smaller events in universities across the country, but we chose the University of Nairobi to host the main festival," he said.

The festival promises a memorable experience for students and members of the public. Participants will have an opportunity to interact with leading American organizations, technology companies, educational institutions, innovators, and sports organizations.

Among the organizations expected at the event are Microsoft and Google, alongside representatives from American universities who will provide information on study opportunities in the United States. Students will also enjoy talent showcases, sporting activities, a cooking competition, and volunteer opportunities to serve as event ushers.

Welcoming the partnership, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ayub Gitau called upon the University community to support the event.

"The University has grown through strategic partnerships such as this one, and we are delighted to host this important celebration," he said.

Also present at the meeting was Ms. Esther Kihang'ah, Country Director of American Spaces Kenya, who highlighted some of the exciting innovations that will be showcased during the festival. These include a drone experience station where participants can learn how to fly drones and an innovation hub featuring projects supported by the U.S. Embassy.
