VC welcomes over 10,000 new students

The University of Nairobi has welcomed over 10,000 new students for the Academic Year 2020/21.
The new students have been admitted to the six UoN Colleges and the ODeL Campus. This admission process is an important milestone in the history of the University of Nairobi as it is the first time that the institution has conducted end to end academic processes using online platforms.
In the Vice-Chancellor’s virtual address to the new students, Prof. Stephen Kiama welcomed them and gave them wholesome advice that will help them steer their way through university life.
“Congratulations for the hard work that propelled you to be admitted into this prestigious University,” said the Vice-Chancellor. “Your arrival signals the assurance of continuity of the University. You have now become members of UON family and we are happy that you have chosen to join us.”
The Vice-Chancellor challenged the students to take advantage of the opportunities presented to them while at the University.
“In this journey I implore on you to be ready to interact and network with people from diverse backgrounds who will provide you with valuable learning experiences that no teacher will ever teach you. You will be learning from the greatest in the field of study and with the best and the brightest around you to challenge your perspectives and curiosity,” he noted. “We have many renowned Professors, some of them we have continued to retain beyond their retirement age as Emeritus Professors to provide mentorship to the young faculty. These Professors are treasures that you will only find here! I encourage particularly the graduate students to take advantage of their presence and make use of them.”
Prof. Kiama also spoke about the effects the implementation of the COVID-19 guidelines has had on the University’s activities. He noted that the application of technology in solving problems and in communication is one of the critical skills for the future that every graduate from the University of Nairobi must acquire for work and for personal survival in this digital era is important.
The Vice Chancellor’s freshmen address is always a very important ceremony for the University. It is part of the freshmen orientation where new students are welcomed to the University community. In order to give the time to settle down and adjust to life at the University of Nairobi, a week of orientation has been set aside. The students are introduced to various aspects that form part of their lifestyle for the period of stay at the university.
