In April 2020, the University management decided to mainstream the use of online tools for registration, orientation, teaching and learning for new students admitted to 2020/2021 academic year.

To this end, the University of Nairobi has put in place an efficient online system to register new students and take them through orientation. In addition, the teaching and learning will take place virtually. The new students have been admitted to the Colleges of Architecture and Engineering, Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences, Biological and Physical Sciences, Education and External Studies, Humanities and Social Sciences, Health Sciences, and the ODeL Campus.

“It has been a long journey that involves everyone’s participation. We already have students who have registered. This system will generate data which will help us in decision making up until when these students graduate,” said Prof. Julius Ogeng’o, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic Affairs. “We need to embrace the spirit of continual improvement.”

Prof. Ogeng’o was speaking at the launch of the virtual student registration and online portal held on August 26, 2020 which was presided over by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Stephen Kiama.

“We celebrate a technology milestone in the 50 years of our existence as a University. The COVID-19 pandemic has changed how we conduct university business. Registration as we knew it, had to be physical and have students arrive with suitcases escorted by their guardians. Today, a new frontier has been chartered for us as we register over 8000 students online,” said Prof. Kiama. “With the new systems some challenges will be experienced and we call upon all to be patient as we do full online registration. Let us continue to embrace the core value of working as a team, team work, to take the University to greater heights. I wish to welcome all our new students to the University of Nairobi.”

According to Paul Kariuki, ag. Director, ICTC, the early registration opened on Monday, August 24, 2020 and will close on August 30, 2020.

“We already have students registering online through the student portal- smis.uonbi.ac.ke. The system is for all new students undergraduate and postgraduate,” he said. “The actual registration date is August 31, 2020. Any student registering after it will be considered as late registration. In addition, the orientation online links will be sent to all students who register.

Mr. H.O.D. Webuye, the ag. Academic Registrar, said that admission letters have been send to the students and that they have a check list of all the documents needed for the registration process to be complete.

“The documents in the registration checklist include the KCSE result slip, admission letter, signed bond form, signed medical form, proof of payment of fees, national id or birth certificate, passport photo and a signature,” said Mr. Webuye.

Orientation

The students will undergo orientation programmes at the college and faculty levels as well as the university wide one. The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Stephen Kiama will address first years virtually on Thursday, September 3, 2020 at 9.00 am.

The University congratulates and welcomes all the students who have been selected for various degree programmes at this premier University.
